This semester Exploring Classical Music transitions from the romantic era into music of the 20th century. The first several classes will be a departure from the model of grouping the music by a specific composer.

Memorial to Luciano Pavarotti
June 10
The first class will be a memorial to the life works of the greatest tenor of our generation, Luciano Pavarotti. This program will include a variety of music from various operas and other performances by this giant of the music world.

Patriotic Music
June 24
Once again, the program prior to the 4th of July will be devoted to the music heritage of our great country. The program will conclude with a digitally enhanced live recording of the Stars and Stripes Forever performed by the original Sousa Band and introduced and conducted by John Phillip Sousa.

The Music of Early Black Composers
July 8
This program will focus on the works of William Grant Still and Duke Ellington. Included in the program will be excerpts from Still’s Afro-American Symphony which was the first symphony by a Black composer performed by a major U.S. symphony orchestra. Also featured will be Ellington’s beautiful Suite from The River.

The Music of Maurice Ravel
July 22
Included in this program will be selections from Ravel’s Rhapsodie Espangnole and Daphnis et Chloe. Also included will be his Bolero and Pavane.

The Music of Aram Katchaturian
August 5
This program will include the Masquerade and Gayne Suites and other symphonic and concerto pieces.
