Grand Juries
July 10
Speaker: Lew Avera, Director and Training Committee Chair, California Grand Jurors’ Association; former Orange County Grand Juror
Grand juries are among the most recognized institutions of our government, originating in England in the 12th century and brought forward from the founding days of our country. They exist at both the federal and state level and in both civil and criminal matters.
California is one of the few remaining states which uses continuously seated grand juries in all of its counties. The provision for grand juries in California flows from the state constitution and the general functioning is governed by the California Penal Code.
A grand jury within a county is comprised of citizens of the county, and represents a unique opportunity for the selected citizens to serve in such a capacity. The details of service differ from county to county, but the overall function is the same.
This course will be presented by the California Grand Jurors’ Association, a statewide non-profit corporation composed of former grand jurors. The presenters are former members of an Orange County grand jury. Particular emphasis will be placed on the Orange County Grand Jury in describing the details of grand jury service and functioning.

Repatriates from Asia to Postwar Japan: From Gaichi (outer territories) to Naichi (homeland)
August 7
Speaker: Kristine Dennehy, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of History, CSUF
This speaker will focus on the lives and writings of ordinary Japanese citizens who were repatriated from various parts of the defeated Japanese empire in Asia to the Japanese home islands after August 15, 1945. It will focus particularly on the history of Japanese living in Korea and Northeast China (Manchuria), following their journey back to a country under allied occupation. Once in Japan, they published local newsletters advocating the safe return of their compatriots, items which were subject to occupation censorship and the cold war priorities of the United States-led forces in Asia. Dr. Dennehy will give a historical overview of this process and discuss the research she has done using these newsletters from the late 1940s.
